Launched in March 2012, H.I.P. is a quarterly reading series, hosted by Erin Harris, Brittney Inman, & Kim Perel, in New York City.

H.I.P. is an acronym for our surnames: Harris, Inman, Perel. Launching the reading series has been a true team effort. We wanted to choose a name that connoted our individuality but also our shared vision. The letters are discrete, yet when taken together, they accrue meaning. For us, that meaning is best characterized by Jack Kerouac's definition of the word "hip": " interest in everything . . . the disinclination to brawl and the recognition of foolishness in arguments and wranglings . . .to dig the diggings, which leads to involved friendship groups." We think amazing things happen when driven, creative people band together. We want to promote that!

We are so excited about Joyce Johnson’s biography of Jack Kerouac, forthcoming from Viking this September! Joyce read an excerpt from THE VOICE IS ALL for H.I.P.’s launch event, and it was absolutely brilliant. Check out the starred PW review of this title, here, and stay updated via Joyce’s brand new Facebook fan page.

An intimate of Kerouac who has chronicled his life and the beat culture (including in her award-winning 1983 memoir, Minor Characters), Johnson brings an insider’s perspective to this insightful study of how Kerouac found his literary voice. —PW
